Is dvi and hdmi cable the same thing?

thanks... im trying to conect my ps3 to my 19in hp monitor and i needed to know what cable i needed

  1. The other response is correct. The two are not the same, but they are both digital and are compatible re video (hence HDMI to DVI cables) but you would need a separate cable for audio if you use one.

    DVI is actually a better connection in some ways (larger and more robust). Note the DVI spec is the basis for the video section of the HDMI spec.

    Where would you use an HDMI to DVI cable?  One example, would be from a AV receiver to a projector (since you don't need to send audio to a projector) or to a HDTV when the audio would be processed in the receiver.


  2. No. HDMI carries the digital video signal and also audio on the same cable. DVi only carries the digital video signal.
