  1. If you ask, I can only presume that you are referring to poppy seeds taken in excess showing up positive or opiates on a drug test.  You'd have to take hundreds for this to even maybe occur.  Eating 5 a week is only bad if you're trying to control your weight.

  2. Hi, :)

Well, eating 5 poppy seed muffins a week is like eating 5 donuts a week, but poppy seed muffins are just a LITTLE healthier.  If you're on a diet and watching your calories, then I probably wouldn't eat that many.  Also, don't eat them for a snack or in between meals - muffins are good for breakfast, and should be as a treat.  My family and I eat very, very healthy, and for breakfast every day, we eat fruit or granola cereal, and on Saturdays, we eat a treat like muffins, or pancakes, or waffles, etc.

You should read the box or ingredients you put into the muffins to see how many grams of fat, saturated fat, and trans fat there is, and also look at the grams of sugar, cholesterol, sodium... look at everything and make sure it doesn't have too much of any of that.  If one muffin has 4 grams of fat, that is quite a bit of fat!

SO, the answer to your question is: YES.  5 muffins a week isn't at all good on your health and you should definitely try to limit it to maybe 1 a week or so.  They may taste good at the moment, but the health effects will be serious later on in life.

Plus, poppy seeds themselves are good for you - but the muffin part is not!  Poppy seeds can be added to almost anything - from the main meal to dessert - so try adding them to more foods!

  3. It will be bad if you have to take a drug test!  :)

  4. Harmless.

  5. Poppy seeds, like any seeds, are mostly passed through your system. Yes, there can be cross reactivity with an opiate test if taken in high enough numbers. Seeds can get caught in the intestinal tract and cause a painful condition called diverticulitis. Those with diets rich in refined sugars and low in fiber tend to be at higher risk.

If you carb load your diet (ie, muffins, pasta, bread), it usually means you probably aren't getting enough of the good carbs from fruits and veggies. Try replacing your muffin with something more protein based. You won't get that sugar rush, but you will have sustained energy level.

  6. In general, eating too much of ANYTHING can be bad. The problem with muffins is that they are most often loaded with added sugar, trans fats, saturated fats, salt, and possibly preservatives (assuming you buy them pre-made).

Depending on your overall diet, how the muffins are made, and your weight/health parameters, the muffins could be a huge issue.

And that's another thing...empty calories. The SIZE of muffins and other such foods has tripled in recent years. And we wonder why people are so obese.

I wouldn't worry too much about the poppy seeds themselves...it's everything else in the muffin that you need to worry about.

    Good luck!
