  1. It is and if you can go offshore to the Galapagos Islands, which Ecuador also owns, it's the trip of a lifetime !!

  2. My niece just spent a summer there this past year, in immersion language courses for Ohio State. She stayed with a local family and became quite close to her hermana (sister in the family) there.

Yes, it is a beautiful country and the people and food are wonderful. It is inexpensive to travel, for the most part. The bazaars and restaurants and clubs were terrific.

However, while she was there and shortly afterward, there was much discord and unrest, some of it tragic and violent, in the capital and surrounding areas of Quito.  Her hermana suggested she dye her blond hair brown at this time and she did do that.

Additionally, it is not safe, according to locals and her adopted family there, near the shared borders of other countries, especially in the mountains. Socialist and  guerrilla communist groups work there and kidnap Americans and some europeans for ransom,  so please always travel in groups in those areas and use trusted local guides from Ecuador, rather than traveling alone or with people of other countries heading the tours, unless you know them and trust them well.

See the US State Department travel advisories about those areas here, under the heading of safety and security:

Galapagos is gorgeous, but make sure ahead of time you plan and get reserved time to be there---they are currently severely restricting groups, and may have by now cut off all tours, other than legit scientific groups, due to heavy eco damage to the environment and animals there. That was discussed while she was there this summer and so they decided not to chance it. They did get close by boat, just not on the islands with the tortoises and canaries themselves.

They decided to take two eco tours elsewhere and loved both trips; they spent little and had a fantastic time.

They use US dollars there and their own money, both are negotiable and legally are supposed to be negotiable/exchanged at the same rate.

    Good luck and safe/happy travelling.

  3. yes! it is a third world economic system in the outskirts of the capital. 1800s farming practices are still used. however, much of hte land is untouched by modern civilizations and u are on the border of the rainforest.

  4. It may be beautiful, but has become very unsafe country to visit.

The justice systems is horrible, the only way you can get anything done is if you have money to pay off everyone!

  5. Its incredibly beautiful - from the people, through to the scenery - with the dizzy heights of cotopaxi the highest active volcano in the world and surrounding national park, the amazon jungle - the delights of the coast and of course the unforgetable Galapagos - totally awesome....definitely on the list of top 5 countries to visit before you die...great food too.  we went in December 06, it felt very safe , and they were still running trips to galapagos. you can pick one up from gringo land in the centre of Quito, or book online before you get there - we went with ecoventura, who were excellent.   Go for it!!!
