I need to replace my old gas central heating. Is it still cheaper than electric, or should i look to the future and switch to electric, with gas getting dearer or even running out.

  1. Electricity is much dearer than gas, especially when it comes to heating.

Other things you can do is have window shutters fitted

make sure you have draught stoppers on the bottom so fyour doors, or put a snake in front of the doors (long log of material with sand in it)

    heavy curtains would also help

and most certainly heating in different parts of the house

    we have reverse cycle

    1 in the large lounge

1 in the small lounge which reaches our bedroom.

and a small one in my sons room (he has CF)

there is a door between his room and my daughters, so we shut their exit doors and put the heater on hih for 30 mins then put it on thermostat @ 25 degrees onreally cold nights.

i'm in the middle of making heavy cutains for their rooms.

I bought big old heavy curtains at the opp shop, put them through the wash and are sewing coloured fabric on teh front of them to match their bedroom decor!

  2. no it wouldnt be cheaper .

i would only be cheaper if you live in saudia arabia :)

  3. all i know is our bills are astronomical! we are paying £70 a month by direct debit for elecricity, and in the winter we are putting £80 a month on our gas card! its getting ridiculous.

  4. in last nights local paper they were suggesting buying more jumpers as gas prices are going up by 70%.the power companys are making billions each year in profits yet the prices continue to rise at alarming rates.     Perhaps it is time to stock up on jumpers as most people will soon be unable to afford to heat their homes.   As for looking towards the future have you considered solar energy, as it would cost thousands to replace a central heating system could it not be possible to set up a solar power system......no more rip off gas bills

  5. Considering gas is used to make electricity, electricity will always be more expensive than gas to produce the same heat output..

The thing to consider is maintenance cost. You can now get an electric boiler that would just replace your current gas boiler  and will heat your radiators and hot water tank with pretty much no / little maintenance whilst your gas boiler must be regularly serviced, not just for efficiency but for safety.

I was paying £17 a month on a maintenance plan whilst my gas bill was £24 a month and even then I was getting a rebate.  For the amount of fuel I was using electric would need to be twice as expensive than gas to justify the gas boiler.

It maybe that for your consumption that electric would be a lot more than the saving by not having to have a service plan. Also factor into the equation the difference in price between a gas boiler & electric - electric should be cheaper

  6. It will not be any cheaper.
