because i just thought, i never heard about slavery in american history class until i learned about the slavery of africans by europeans. simultaneously, i learned that it was customary for african tribes to enslave each other. so could it be that europeans picked up the idea from africans, or was there some slavery even before the slavery of africans that i am unaware of?

  1. the Europeans used slavery to dehumanise and control Africans, when africans took other Africans as slaves it was a spoils of war and never used to dehumanize, you could raise your position in african slavery and marry your captor heirs

  2. Slavery has been around for a long time, and Europeans didn't need to learn it from Africa. Also, there are many different forms of slavery--some things from historical records that are called slavery would more accurately today be called indentured servitude, or being a servant, or being tenant farmers. Chattel slavery, the type practices in the Americas, was the most severe kind, with slaves having no rights at all, families split up at will, and with pretty much no hope of freedom, ever. That's not the kind of slavery that had been practiced in Africa, anyway.

  3. Slavery has been around d**n near since day one. Still goes on today. Won't stop in the foreseeable future either.

  4. slavery was quite common in the Roman Empire, in fact, some of the tribes in what is now Ireland negotiated to NOT be slaves, but considered citizen's of the Empire and had their rights reinforced. there were slaves in Native American feuds, but they were usually assimilated, much like the Roman Empire. one difference between the Romans and the latter slave owners is that a slave in the roman era could buy their own freedom, and it wasnt as hard as it was for the latter slaves to do. Yes, slavery existed in Africa before the slave trade came a-knocking, and many of the slaves sold were from different tribes taken in raids. expand your mind besides what you learn in school...those books are boilerplate. if you are truly interested in history, read about specific subjects. knowledge is a wonderful thing!

  5. Slavery has been around for many thousands of years, who started it is not known.

For some it was forced for others it was a way of working off a debt and still others it was willing service... some were even paid.

Back in biblical times, specifically the Old Testament, slavery existed in all of its forms. Its important to note that servants were not necessarily slaves.

  6. Yes. Everyone in history had slaves at one time or another. After the discovery of the new world there was a need for labor and African kingdoms were built on the slave trade. In your school and schools across America they don't tell the whole truth because there are twisted white people who have control of the curriculum. White people sell themselves short at the cost of their own children. White people are a great people whose history is worth knowing. A people who walked on the moon!

  7. Yes, they talked of slavery in the Bible.
