  1. There is only one species of tiger panthera tigris.  There are nine identified subspecies, three of which are extinct.  The remaining are endangered to a greater or lesser degree in the wild.


  2. All species of wild tiger are very endangered, to the point that officials are concerned that the remaining animals do not have enough genetic diversity to maintain a healthy population.  Their population has been reduced by hunting for skins and body parts used in traditional Chinese medicine.  At least as bad is that the human population has taken so much of their habitat.

    The sumatran tiger is critically endangered.

    The Siberian tiger is critically endangered.

    The Persian tiger is already extinct.

    The Balinese tiger is already extinct.

    The Caspian tiger is already extinct.

    Makes you want to weep, doesn't it?
