Looks like Immigration and Police (forgive the capital - it's habit) disagree.

In this instance, and without evidence, I'm inclined to believe Immigration.

Anyway, if they are "illegal", isn't it the responsibility of the arresting authority (police) to ensure they end up where they are supposed to end up?

Police have done even less than the beleaguered fools at Immigration to demonstrate their trust to me.

Either way it's a mess.
