  1. Yup - one a person [guy or gal] reaches 18 here in UK then they are subject to possible jury service.

People exempt from jury service are those with a criminal record.  The bad folk.

The best jury movie of all time - "Tweleve Angry Men"

    A star cast. . . . .

  2. A any time of your life after you reach 18 years of age you can get the envelope on your doormat asking you to attend court. This can be at 18 years old or 57 years old, age has no releveance as such. The only time you can get out of doing it is if you have a valid reason that your doctor will verify and sign you off from doing it.

  3. Well.  everyone is meant to have a chance at being selected.   The pool is determined by voting records.  In Chicago, this means that many dead people get summoned all the time.

I have never been asked.     My friend, Gloria, is profoundly deaf and has been asked, but can not serve because she relies on lip reading and misinterprets much of what she 'hears' and if the person talking isn't facing her she hears nothing at all.

I thing that the jury duty pay seriously needs to be revamped.  You get $15 per day of service.  This is antiquated rates that have never been adjusted.  At the time the rates were set, $15 was a reasonable days wage.  This is a terrible hardship for folks who work for small employers who can't afford to pay their employees when they aren't working.

  4. If your name is on the electoral list then you can be summoned for jury service..There are several ways out of it like a criminal record, medical reasons,  insanity etc.

  5. As above once selected you have to do it unless you have a concrete reason not to.

I'm 22 and have been called twice.

  6. All citizens are expected to render jury duty when their names are picked.

  7. No, it is random who get picked, but once you are 18 then you are eligible to get randomly picked. i think that it is a criminal offence to refuse to do jury duty once you have bee picked.

  8. Not everyone.

If you are oer 18 and have had a request to take part, then unless you have a strong valid reason, you must attend.

  9. I have been on the Jury list for about 50 years and have never ever been called. Very difficult to get out of once your name comes up. I know of a person that was on a jury for a fraud case and he was totally lost with the evidence and refused to bring  a verdict at the end of the trial. There were 3 that did not say one way or the other for the defendant and he was discharged. Three years later he was in court again for a similar offence. This time he was convicted by the new jury. My friend lost 4 months off work and almost lost his job because of it.
