It sort of depends. If your talking about swimming, (you are posted in the swimming section after all) then yeah, I don't know anyone who learned how to swim from a book. But in things like history a lot of times there is no other way to learn. On other things it depends on the person.

It depends on the person. Of course you need experience to be a good swimmer, I mean, practice makes perfect! But also, I do know that books and videos can be very helpful. One of the best ways to learn how to swim is to videotape yourself and figure out what you're doing wrong.
