  1. if you have kids under 7

  2. It is all about risk. Even the best brands can fail.

$200 barely covers one-time home visit for a support call, so sounds like a good deal.

  3. Besides the issue of kids..., for LCD TVs, I doubt you will need it.  For plasma, yes.  Because plasma doesn't last as long as LCDs do.  And best of all, LCD TVs are cheaper.  So, if you haven't purchased one yet, consider LCD instead.

Such comments about plasma TVs not being as good as LCDs have been on Cnet and G4.

Check out Consumer's Report and see what they have to say about plasma vs. LCD TVs.

However, $200 more dollar for only an extra 1-2 year warranty sounds like a rip-off to me.  Check out sony.com and notice the different in warranty prices verses what you are telling us.  That is, if you are getting a Sony.

  4. shjOlds, can you explain how Plasmas burn up faster than LCD.  I mean I am quite curious as somebody who has installed well over 100 HT systems that you are privy to something I am not aware of.

In fact although Plasmas runs hotter than LCD that heat isn't anything compared to that of a RPTV or Front projector system, and I really haven't heard of any Plasmas burning up.

So unless your willing to offer proof please stop spreading FUD on plasmas.

To the OP  warranties are normally good for about three years and what people don;t know is that the manufacturer warranty covers the first 12-18 months of that three year warranty, so actually you are only getting 1.5-2 years warranty coverage.

now if you pay with your credit card, the credit card company will automatically extend the manufacturer warranty by two years so in total you will have three years without having to buy an extended warranty.  Save your money.

  5. If the faulty is yours... Yes.

    If not- no.

If the problem is with the sellers product.... they are required to give you a new device.
