  1. Both!

  2. I'll tell you that my niece, despite having only a brother, was playing with girl's toys and playing dress up before she could talk and before TV could have had much of an effect on her (the only programming she watched was gender neutral).

I've also seen feminine men in situations where being the least bit feminine was not accepted; knowing the desire of human beings to fit in it seems this feminine behavior was difficult to repress, which suggest to me that it was biological.

Having said all this, I think it's foolish for people to insist that all behavior is biologically determined. On the other hand, it's equally foolish to me when people say human beings are blank slates. The answer is not white or black, it's gray. It's both nature and nurture, and because of the intangibles and variables, there's no way to know what biological predicates, combined with what environment, will produce what personality type. Science may one day offer the broad strokes, and offer models, but there's a magical part of humanity that cannot fully be explained. This is true if for no other reason than the limitations of the human intellect.

Born or bred?--no learned answer to the question disallows one completely.
