Question:

Is file and printer sharing encrypted?

I have a virtual server running Windows 2003 SP2 connecting directly to the internet. I have enabled file and print sharing and am connecting from home as an administrator.

Is this safe? Are my passwords being sent over the network in plaintext?

If so, is there any way to secure this?

I'm working with large files so file and print sharing is favorable over ftp because I don't need to reupload everything for minor changes.

Thanks for any advice.

  1. The safer way to do this is to use a router and then do a VPN connection to the server. That keeps your exposure to the outside world to a minimum.

If you are directly connected to the internet with the server, you have several added security issues! (Why do you think there are so many "Security Updates" New issues are found often!)

Read Microsofts help and security information.

    http://www.microsoft.com/technet/securit...

At least that is a start.

  2. I agree completely. The chances are you have already been detected, hacked and taken over. Get your server offline, scan all data files and back them up. Then erase the installation and start over

  3. This is in no way safe.  Not only did you expose your server for your own access, but the whole World can see you server now too.  I would shut down access to it right away and do what Tracy said, setup a VPN to access your private company data.
