  1. Nope VAT on certain items of food aren't exempt and yes resturants are allowed to charge it.

  2. certain food items such as bread are zero rated, other things like confectionery and beer are standard rating. Anything deemed to be catering is standard rated and a restaurant basically provides catering services hence everything they charge for will be subject to VAT at the standard rate.

  3. No there is vat on food and restaurant's must charge it.

  4. The rules are long winded.

    But here are the basics

Food (in tins etc) from shops; No

All hot food from cafes etc (in or out); Yes

Cold food  from cafes etc ( in) Yes

Cold food from cafes etc (out): No

Provided of course that the cafe in question is VAT registered.

There are certain dispensations for the likes off pies cooling down (Greggs for instance)

    I hope this helps.

  5. Food is not exempt VAT.

And with restraunts your also paying for a service, not just food.
