  1. It's really tough to compare them, but you can contrast them quite a bit.  As someone who played football for 10+ years including college, and is currently playing rugby, I would say the only similarity is that they are both contact.  Football came from rugby because Teddy Roosevelt was going to ban rugby because he thought it too violent after attending one of his son's matches.  He demanded rules be changed, which eventually led to the football as we know and love today.

The ball is somewhat similar, but a rugby ball is larger and more round than a football (much tougher to tuck away).  Just about everything in rugby is different from football, even tackling.  In football you're always taught to have your head in front, in rugby you're to get your head behind (helps to avoid those nasty neck fractures).  Both sports you're taught to punch the ball out if possible when tackling though.

Rugby training is a cross of endurance, speed and power, where football is all speed and power with very little endurance.  There is a lot more mayhem in rugby, since there is only one ref (3 if you count touch judges) for 30 people vs. 4 (6 if you count line judges) for 22 people.  Rugby is a much faster paced game than football, and the scores are usually pretty similar, but blowouts in rugby look really bad because it's tough to just run the clock down in rugby if you're beating the c**p out of a team, it's a lot easier to score.

Mentally there is no question that football is more difficult than rugby.  Even is you only play one side of the ball, you're often memorizing upwards of 100 plays, where most rugby teams even at the elite level have less than 20.

I can't really say which I prefer, Football definately facilitates bullsh!tting and having a 5 second attention span, and also nearly every guy in America knows the rules but rugby is very entertaining for a longer length of time when you know what is going on, and most Americans don't yet.

  2. yes soccer is for fa.gs who like to run around and pretend their hurt, whereas rugby is a game for men...
