  1. Conjunction: Joins two independent ideas, objects or sentences together. Includes AND, BUT, OR. IS is not a conjunction.

Example: She ran and she caught the bus. It was hot, but the furnace was not running. I can eat ice cream, or I can eat rice cakes.

  2. I'm guessing that this question should be read as "Is 'for' a conjunction?"

No, "for" is a preposition.  A preposition is a word or phrase that requires an object and describes a relationship.  When saying that "government of the people, by the people, and for the people, shall not perish from the face of the earth," the three prepositions describe three different relationships between the government and the people.

A conjunction is a word or phrase that connects parallel structures.  There can be a fair bit of overlap between how conjunctions and prepositions function.  Words like "although", "before", "until" and "while" can function as either conjunctions or prepositions, depending on the structure of the rest of the sentence.

However, I can't think of any example where the word "for" functions as a conjunction.
