Is gemütliche the same as gemütlich?

I was wondering if it is a dialect thing, or do the words actually differ that greatly?

They are both the same word, an adjective, by the way.  The difference the declination of the adjective.  Gemütliche would be used to describe a feminine noun, while gemütlich would describe a neuter noun.

It's not an adjective/adverb thing I think, because if you say "diese Couch ist gemütlich", that's an andjective as much as "die gemütliche couch". It's just that adjectives take on different forms in german depdning on how they are used. There's also "gemütlicher" and "gemütliches" (couch is female in German, thus "gemütliche", Stuhl (chair) is male, thus "ein gemütlicher Stuhl" and sifa is neutral, thus "ein gemütliches Sofa".). And don't get me started on things like "gemütlicheres" or "am gemütlichsten".

In a nutshell: It means the same, and ends vary depending on usage.

- "gemütliche" directly describes something, i.e. gemütliche couch - a comfortable couch

- "gemütlich" describes how something IS, i.e.  die Couch ist gemütlich - the couch IS comfortable

- a comfortable couch

- the couch is comfortable

If you directly describe something with an adjective you have to differ between the noun's gender:

- feminine (adejctive ends with and -e as in gemütliche)

- masculine (adejctive end with an -er as in gemütlicher)

- neutral (adejctive end with an -es as in gemütliches)

Gemuetliche is an adjective, and describes something.

Such as a "Gemuetliche Couch"

Describes how the couch is comfortable.

While Gemuetlich is saying what you are.

I am comfortable. Meaning, Gemuetlich is an adverb.
