  1. geothermal is heat from the earth, a geothermal power station runs on heat from the earth.

  2. No.  Geothermal refers to the heat obtained from the core of the earth.  Groundwater is water that is on or close to the surface of the planet.

Geothermal energy can be obtained by drilling any place on the planet.  The deeper one drills, the hotter the surrounding materials become.  The heated materials are closest to the surface in areas of volcanic activity, Iceland, Yellowstone, Hawaii and other areas close to active volcanoes.

Groundwater is generally at a different temperature than the surrounding atmosphere, and has been used for heating and cooling for centuries.  When the surrounding air is very cold, below freezing, water from the ground will be warmer, and will give off heat when drawn out of the ground and exposed to the air.  Similarly, if it is very hot, ground water will absorb heat from the air cooling it.  This is not the same as geothermal, which is always adding heat.
