  1. Geothermal works well in a home.  The initial investment is high.  You will save money on heating and cooling bills.  How well it works and how much can you save depends on geographic location.

  2. yes it is in the long run

  3. That would depend upon how long you plan to live in your home, and wether or not you have enough room on your property to install a geothermal heat pump with all its trappings.

If you are going to be in your home for over 15 years, then it might be worth it. Also, where do you live?  If you were in Arkansas, a more conventional heating and cooling system probably makes more sense.  If you are in Minnesota however!....

  4. I asked this question a day or so ago.

I am about to install a system for my 1400 sf home.  I currently have a well and an oil firece forced air system.  The geothermal system will require a new return well and some minor ductwork modifications.  After available rebates, the 4-ton system will cost me $12,600.  I expect to see a payback in less than 8 years assuming very modest increases in oil prices.

I expect monthly operating costs to average $40.  I will only need oil for hot water production.  I think its worth it.

  5. Geothermal is more economical used on a larger scale.  To do it individually house by house would mean drilling bore holes for each house.  You can understand how that could get expensive.  Apartment and office buildings or industrial parks are better candidates for geothermal.
