Question:

Is getting a GED bad?

Over a year ago I left my regular high school and started taking classes at home. I found that this is not working for me either and I fall more and more behind as time goes by. Would just dropping all of it and getting my GED be a bad alternative?

I left school in the first place because I could not deal with the immaturity of my surroundings. I was bored with everything, and I found that every class I took, at the end of it, I came out learning nothing.

My mother is afraid I won't get anywhere in life with my GED, but I plan to take classes at a community college, and actually going somewhere with my life.

  1. A GED is very limiting. They probably won't let you into the community college with a GED because you won't meet the minimum entrance requirements. Maybe you can call the college and ask admissions about that. Another disadvantage is that some people go into job interviews and say they have a GED and they get laughed at. Most people won't accept it as a high school diploma equivalent. They will look down on you. I would advise, from personal experience getting your normal high school diploma. It will affect you the rest of your life and follow you where ever you go.

  2. it's better than NOT getting your ged.

with a ged you still have options. you can go to a community college for 2 years and transfer into a 4 year university. you can join the military. you have a leg up on people who didn't graduate high school.

that said a normal high school degree will get you places faster. you can apply directly to a 4 year university. you out class job applicants with only a ged.

above all though, years down the road if you want to make something out of yourself the difference between a ged and a high school diploma wont mean squat.

  4. Well you have two choices here: 1. go back to school and deal with everyone.  If you are as mature as you think you are it won't be a big dealing with others. 2. Go get a G.E.D. I work with a physician who dropped out of high school and received a G.E.D.  You can do whatever you want.
