  1. Yes.  I took in an older stray male cat and was concerned about the same thing.  After a few weeks he settled down and became a big fat docile cat.

When he was dumped in my neighborhood he was skinny and mean.  My neighbors were going to call animal control so I borrowed a live animal trap to catch him and when that worked I took him in to get neutered and hoped for the best.  I named him Buster.

  2. A male cat is just as castrated at a year old as he would be at 6 months, although if he has developed bad habits it will take longer to break them.

With a female there is no downside to spaying at any age and tremendous upsides in reducing the number of little eyes saying don't kill me please.

  3. Yes though if the cat is spraying urine already, there is a slight chance he may not stop the habit.  That's why neutering before it starts is better.  But chances are he will stop, though it may take a few weeks for the hormones in his system to die down and for him to stop the habit.

  4. yes anytime is effective so he can't get another cat pregnant but if you don't want him to spray the house to mark his territory then you should do it early.

  5. Once a male cat is fixed-he can't be a father anymore- but if he is use to roaming outside and marking with urine this may not stop.

However it may reduce the urge.
