I am a recovering addict with 18 months clean and sober. I have been convicted of felonies and misdemeanors. I am currently in very good standing with my probation and will start community college this month in the area of human services... I am very afraid that my record will make my efforts in school a waste of time. I have completely changed my life and want o work toward a comfortable future for myself....does anyone have any input?

  1. First off congratulations on being sober and yes I would try to get those expunged and talk to your college about financial aid and try to get an education. While some employers may be judgemental I would try to keep quiet about your past unless it comes up, if it is far enough in the past they might not even consider it and see the good you have made in your life.

  2. No it's not a waste of time.  I would start looking into having the misdemeanors expunged.  Many employers will look past convictions if they can tell you have cleaned up your life.  Just remember to be open and honest about your past if it comes up.

  3. I don't think any education is a waste of time.  When you talk to prespective employers,it shows you have indeed turned your live around.  I hope you r long term goal is a BS degree.  That is a major key to a better life.

    Good Luck
