  1. If you are talking about girdling trees, it IS an effective way to completely control (kill) the entire root system of the tree by cutting the phloem channels that allow sugars to be transferred to the roots where they can be stored.

    But seriously, what exactly are you asking?  Tree girdling?  Root girdling? Effective for what purpose?

    Tree girdling is effective if you want to take down a single tree in an area where you don't want to disturb the surrounding growth.  It is a slow process but the tree will eventually die and fall.

    Root girdling and branch girdling have their uses but I would imagine they work better on a small scale (like trying to grow an extra large fruit for the county fair) and not so well on a large scale (commercial farm).

  3. What's the question supposed to mean?  For example, 'is girdling an effective way' to do what and for whom?
