  1. A careful examination of a large number of species in numerous parts of the planet projects that a stunning portion of them will be "committed to extinction" in just 50 years, with only modest global warming (Thomas, 2004).

"Instead of sea levels rising by about 40 centimetres, as the IPCC predicts in one of its computer forecasts, the true rise might be as great as several metres by 2100. That is why, they say, planet Earth today is in 'imminent peril.'"

    http://www.truthout.org/issues_06/062007...

"A one-meter sea level rise would wreak particular havoc on the Gulf Coast and eastern seaboard of the United States.

'No one will be free from this,' said Overpeck, whose maps show that every U.S. East Coast city from Boston to Miami would be swamped."

    If we look past 2100,

    - Global and regional warming could more than quadruple after 2100

    - Sea level will still be rising at the end of the millennium (3000)

    - Ocean pH will fall dramatically for all but the minimum emission scenario

    - Business-as-usual could lead to abrupt climate changes

    - Abrupt climate changes could occur long after emissions cease

    - The ocean carbon sink becomes less effective the more CO2 is emitted

    - The land could be a net carbon source on the millennial timescale

This is what happened in the past when climate warmed due to CO2 (emissions from volcanoes that time) and the oceans acidified:

    Permian–Triassic extinction event (source Wikipedia):

It was the Earth's most severe extinction event, with up to 96 percent of all marine species and 70 percent of terrestrial vertebrate species becoming extinct. Because approximately 25 percent of species survived the event, the recovery of life on earth took significantly longer than after other extinction events. This event has been described as the "mother of all mass extinctions".

  2. Well, I'd change your essay to why it's NOT a threat.

BUT, if you're going to go that route, watch Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth". It's actually REALLY good, and VERY persuasive.

Although, I personally believe that it's a trend and that the earth will work it out like it has done for billions of years...

  3. Yes it is a threat. DEFINITELY! There are so many signs to prove it such as rising waters and higher temperatures. Some might argue that it doesn't matter b/c its not affecting US PERSONALLY..... but it is, that is why there has been an increase in skin cancer and hurricanes in the past years. Soon there will be more threats because the rising water will cause islands to be completely submerged (people are already being forced to move). Also some inactive volcanoes MAY break-off and MAY cause massive waves that could cover the entire east coast of the US. Also it's not good for our health, all the pollutions in the air from CO2s are so toxic! Go green save energy and recycle! And download google's new energy saver widget to your google desktop!!!

  4. just be like... YO you lil' peeps might not care now, but when yo homes and yo babies are all up in da ocean from da risin sea, you will regret the'... wait... what were we talkin about?

  5. No.  Any change in climate causes some parts of the world to be worse for humans while life in other areas is improved but overall warmer climates are better for life on earth than cooler climates.  Here are three reasons why global warming is NOT a threat, based on the historical record of previous warm and cold periods:

    1.  Warmer climates produce less severe weather.  The most powerful hurricanes form when cool air flows over warm water.

    2.  Increased crop yields.  Longer growing seasons and warmer weather in temperate regions make it easier to grow food.

    3.  Fewer deaths due to accidents and infectious disease.  People spend more time indoors in crowded places during cold weather (this is why winter is known as "cold & flu season") and people are involved in more accidents when there is snow and ice on the ground.

  6. Yes. It is worse than terrorism.

  7. 1. It really isn't unless you listen to the drivel of Mssr. Gore. The thing that will be damaged is the US economy and the rest of the free world that buys into it.

Russia has announced that it WILL NOT abide by the Kyoto protocol because it would affect their economy and the emerging middle class.

They aren't intending to abide by a document they were adamant about the US being a part of. On top of that, China and India are being given a free ride.

    2. People who are in the lower income groups are suffering from higher food and fuel prices because of erroneous "scientific" data. Statistics can be manipulated by using the "snapshot" of a continuum giving a false reading for the agenda. Perpetuating the myth that seals and polar bears are going to die among impressionable children is another area that is continuing the fallacy.

    3. Insisting on wind and solar energy as the "savior" of the planet and energy problem is a simplistic way of condemning the oil companies and the people who make policy. Admittedly, something needs to be done but to only rely on those two sources doesn't take into account the vagaries of the weather. Sometimes the wind don't blow and the sky gets overcast. Add in the price of the real-estate, disruption of wildlife habitat and other things liberals cling to so lovingly, and you can begin to understand what we are faced with.

  8. I would take J.S. comments with a grain of salt.  Global warming is a minor threat.  The consequences have been grossly exaggerated.  It is not too surprising that people reading websites and tabloids would get the idea that it is a serious problem.  It is not.  The main problems will be from incremental sea level rise.  The sea was rising anyway.  As a geologist, I understand that climates and sea levels are not static.  Sea levels have been rising for thousands of years.  If we have a sea level rise of a foot, then that exposes some places such as Miami in greater danger from hurricanes and storms.  It is a manageable problem.  Sorry I didn't give you much.

  9. No, it is just natural and nothing can be done about it the temperature will go down soon enough.

  10. Global warming is a threat.  It promises illegal taxation, a lower standard of living, unreasonable expectations for pollution control, a bass ackwards approach to cleaning up the environment by charging extra money and making people buy nebulous "carbon credits" so they can turn the heat up in their house to keep the pipes from bursting.  I mean, we don't want to wast water, eh.

The only real threat about global warming is that it threatens to empty your wallet and eventually your savings, it might even cost you your job.
