Is global warming connected to the depletion of the ozone layer or are they unrelated?

This may be a stupid question but I was told one has nothing to do with the other. What do you think?

  1. the depletion of the ozone layer does not cause global warming as some people think.

    but they are related in a couple of ways;

    1) the chemicals that caused the ozone thinning are potent greenhouse gasses in their own right, so by phasing them out we are also reducing the agw effect.

    2) the seasonal hole in the ozone layer that still opens up every winter over the antarctic causes a local cooling effect that has helped delay melting of the antarctic ice.

  2. They are not really related as such.Global warming is the result of the excessive emission of greenhouse gases whereas the depletion of the ozone layer is the result of the emission of CFCs and other poisonous gases. The relationship between them is that they are environmental problems caused by human negligence and ignorance.

  3. They are unrelated.  The ozone is being depleted by aerosols.  The global warming theory states the releasing of carbon dioxide from the combustion process is heating up the earth.

They are separate, eliminate one, the other can or will still exist.

NOTE:  Global warming is effected by the concentration of ozone, as ozone is a greenhouse gas.  However you question was a depletion and due to the nature and amount of ozone depletion would act to cool the earth, but would probable insignificant.

  4. Of course they're related, global warming and the depletion of the ozone layer both are happening because of the pollution and the greenhouse effect. Greenhouse gases are given off by fossil fuels, such as water vapor, CO2, and nitrous oxide. Because of burning fossil fuels we're increasing the amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. The greenhouse effect traps heat to keep our planet warm and with more greenhouse gases more heat gets trapped. There you have Global warming. Ozone reflects harmful rays from the sun from reaching the earth. Because of CFC's from cleaning products and old refrigerators and many other harmful chemicals along with other greenhouse gases the ozone is depleting. Since now we have less ozone more harmful light reaches earth and then gets trapped by the greenhouse effect. There you go that's how they're related. Hope the explained it well enough.

  5. Ozone depletion describes two distinct, but related observations: a slow, steady decline of about 4 percent per decade in the total amount of ozone in Earth's stratosphere since the late 1970s; and a much larger, but seasonal, decrease in stratospheric ozone over Earth's polar regions during the same period. The latter phenomenon is commonly referred to as the ozone hole.

In addition to this well-known stratospheric ozone depletion, there are also tropospheric ozone depletion events, which occur near the surface in polar regions during spring.

The detailed mechanism by which the polar ozone holes form is different from that for the mid-latitude thinning, but the most important process in both trends is catalytic destruction of ozone by atomic chlorine and bromine.[1] The main source of these halogen atoms in the stratosphere is photodissociation of chlorofluorocarbon (CFC) compounds, commonly called freons, and of bromofluorocarbon compounds known as halons. These compounds are transported into the stratosphere after being emitted at the surface. Both ozone depletion mechanisms strengthened as emissions of CFCs and halons increased.

CFCs and other contributory substances are commonly referred to as ozone-depleting substances (ODS). Since the ozone layer prevents most harmful UVB wavelengths (270–315 nm) of ultraviolet light (UV light) from passing through the Earth's atmosphere, observed and projected decreases in ozone have generated worldwide concern leading to adoption of the Montreal Protocol banning the production of CFCs and halons as well as related ozone depleting chemicals such as carbon tetrachloride and trichloroethane. It is suspected that a variety of biological consequences such as increases in skin cancer, damage to plants, and reduction of plankton populations in the ocean's photic zone may result from the increased UV exposure due to ozone depletion.

  6. i think they are related

  7. don't you get it global warming is a fraud the media pushes down our throats. Al gore and other globalist are supporting this bill just to get your tax dollars to support ther real agenda which includes destroyng america and eventualy enslave you and I and then kill us off all one by one. Watch the documentary endgame by alex jones.

  8. Simple answer.  They are unrelated.

Real (complex) answer.  There are some minor interactions, that are not a big deal.  For example, the hole in the ozone over Antarctica is one factor (not the only one) keeping the warming rate in Antarctica down, compared to the rest of the world.

This is one thing where the wikipedia article on it actually is excellent.

"Although they are often interlinked in the mass media, the connection between global warming and ozone depletion is not strong. There are four areas of linkage:"

    Etc.

  9. Absolutely Not!

The simple fact is that there is not now, nor has there ever been any depletion of the ozone layer.

Ozone production is caused by solar activity.

This is why ozone is always at it's maximum in the tropical regions since the sun's angle of radiation is never far removed from the equator(+/- 23°).

The lack of solar activity during the winter months over the poles results in lower production of ozone.

There never was a 'Hole', only lower than average levels.

The lowest levels occur in April in the Arctic and October in the Antarctic.

CFC's were never a threat to ozone production, or a cause of any depletion of ozone.

This fact (or any other basic science for that matter), was not going to deter the 'powers that be' which banned the use of a completely safe, inert, and efficient product.

It still amazes me that even after over 15 years of the cessation of production and use of CFC's, that some people still believe the myths, and even believe that an older model refrigerator is able to cause any damage to the environment!

I can say in closing that since it is the Sun which drives our weather, and creation of ozone, that the two are somewhat related.

Man could not have any influence over either condition however.

  10. It is unrelated. I can't think of any way it is.

  11. yes both r related stupid
