Is global warming over now because they changed the name to climate change to incorporate every change now?

Just seems funny to me now that real scientist are calling for a cooling period that offset the warming trend of the last few years. Am I wrong in thinking this?

  1. No, you are wrong.  They didn't change the name.  It's always been climate change to scientists.

A reporter invented the term "global warming", and it caught on.  Now the two terms are often used interchangeably.

Nothing sinister going on here, no ulterior motive, just a reporter making up a catchy phrase because he liked the way it sounded.

  2. After 10 years without temperatures increasing, "global warming" started to sound silly.

Since there is no such thing as a static climate, change sounded like a better marketing term.

  3. The term "global warming" is a popularized, over-simplified term that causes many problems as we can see just by some of the answers here.  It causes people who don't know the science to not believe it exists because they can point to areas where it is cooler or the same temperature as previously.  Global climate change is more accurate and does not lead to denials based on such silly rationale.  Man-induced global climate change DOES cause global warming....overall.  The average global temperature has been and is increasing faster now than during any previous natural fluctuations.  However, that does not mean that every year will be warmer than the previous, and that every area will be warmer.  It is an overall, long-term trend.  Localized conditions can and will still vary within that.  Additionally, some areas could actually have drops in temperature.  Climate is heavily influenced by ocean circulation.  One of the potential impacts of global climate change seen in many models is a disruption of ocean circulation patterns.  If the Gulf Stream and associated North Atlantic Drift Current is altered, that could dramatically decrease temperatures in some areas such as the British Isles, as those currents bring a lot of heat energy to that area.  That is why although at a latitude similar to Maine, Nova Scotia, etc, the British Isles are currently much warmer, because of the influence of the currents.  A change in ocean circulation would greatly change the distribution of heat energy across the globe.

  4. Global climate change is the term that encompasses the vagaries of this phenomenon.

Who and what is a "real" scientists?  Climate scientists almost uniformly endorse the concept of GCC.

  5. No.

Do people in denial have so little to go on that they focus on what people call climate change instead of justifying their position with evidence (if they could find any)?

Unfortunately Rush Limbaugh and friends have made conservatives look like nuts by rejecting science, leading to dividing Republicans into a party with no consistent strategy and no effective alternative to whatever Democrats would like to present.

I'm against a U.S. tax at the moment because it's doomed for failure while most of the world isn't on board.  Unfortunately, repeating a "global warming isn't happening" mantra isn't an educated or effective strategy for opposing the tax, so it'll probably pass.

  6. It will always change . When it rains a lot here it is dry some place. GW is near impossible. Another problem was the green house gas that was to cause GW is not there. CO2 they say is 300 ppm ,and I doubt that . Now change that to percent of our atmosphere. CO2 is .0003%  which is still nothing. Working with hazardous gas U always watch the Oxygen level. It is 29.9% and as solid as a rock. When it drops just a little we are in triuble. The plants have done a great job on our CO2.They like CO2.

  7. This is not about global warming It`s about the bush whackers and his gang are marketing seem is to keep you pre occupied with end of the world and you must of noticed that the hype over the Obama / Clinton *guess what* more pre occupation .While your back is turned  The Bush Whackers, are out the back door; headed to Dubbi ,and Abidabi ,and turkey ,with all Gold and Oil and DrugsAnd  leave with McCain the Debt ,that will stun the world and they will see The President John McCain hand over the keys to the White House to China Thats why you got to smell the coffee and many more of the puplic Good luck

  8. Global warming and climate change are two completely different things. Global warming refers to only anthropogenic (man-caused) changes in near-surface temperatures over the past 200 years; climate change has been happening since the beginning of the world and refers to every change that occurs in any aspect of the world's climate. Neither has been renamed; it's just that the two are often (wrongfully) used interchangeably, when global warming is an aspect of climate change.
