Is graphite iron a lot different than a steel one? ?

I am a female golf beginner. I have read some opinion about graphite shaft is better than steel for women. However, I also heard about graphite club could mass up with your distances if you are swinging with good posture. Since I am new in this game, I want to learn it right at the beginning. If you can help me figuring it out which kind of iron should I get? Steel or graphite? Thanks for your answer.

  1. Steel shafts are stronger and less prone to damage. They can offer more control and have a greater emphasis on accuracy than distance - they do not suffer from the same twisting or flexing as graphite. They do require a faster swing speed to generate the same distance as a graphite shaft though - this is more of a concern for women as they may have slower, less powerful swings

Generally graphite shafts are more expensive than steel but much lighter (some are more than 50% lighter), and they tend to 'whip' through more on the downswing - which potentially allows for greater clubhead speed and more distance. This is a major plus over steel but it sacrifices control due to shaft flexing and torque, and in some cases inconsistency between shafts - how much of an issue this is depends on the quality and tuning of the shaft. Graphite also soaks up vibration better than steel, so it tends to be less uncomfortable if you dont catch the ball sweetly.

For irons, although many sets do come with graphite shafts, steel is still popular, just be aware that you may sacrifice a few yards.

As with many things to do with golf, it comes down to feel, fitting, and personal preference. My advice is if you already hit the ball well and get good distance then steel is not out of the question, otherwise choose graphite

  3. For a female beginner golfer graphite would be better for you.  Graphite shafts are lighter, allowing you to generate more club head speed so your ball will get airborne, and they can be made to be much whippier than steel, again imparting more energy to the swing/ball strike.

Better players prefer steel shafts as there is more uniformity from shaft to shaft and they provide better feel, but you need to have developed a faster swing speed before you can use them.  I would suspect that a large majority of amateur woman golfers would not be able to swing fast enough to gain benefit from steel shafts.
