i thought i bought romain lettuce cuz the guy at the supermarket assured me the one he gave me was the right one and my 4 guinea's have been eating it for the past week. i ran out and went back for more today and asked a different employee and he said i got the wrong one last time. i triple checked this time and i got the right one for sure. i just want to know if green leaf lettuce is safe or not. i also checked guinea lynx and they only mentioned romain. any help would be greatly appreciated. thank you.

  1. On top of Romaine lettuce I have read that you can also feed them Red and Green leaf lettuce and butter lettuce. These are favorites it says but I wouldnt over feed your guinea pig.

  2. Only green leafy lettuces are safe for rodents. So romain is fine.  Iceberg is the lettuce to avoid. It has little to no nutritional value and is VERY high in nitrates (which can cause cancer and other problems). So no iceberg, ever.

You also should be careful of dark greens, like spinach and kale. They contain a toxin that can build up in your guinea pigs kidneys and eventually cause kidney failure among other things. You can still feed these dark greens but only in small amounts and perferably not everyday.

If you want, most guinea pigs love bell pepper(any color is fine). They are high in vitamin c and other good nutrients. So small bits of bell pepper are a great snack (careful not to feed to much, they are a little spicy).

  3. yes almost every lettuce is fine apart from ice burg lettuce

  4. Nope, just make sure you wash it! My guineas love red pepper as well and it is very high in vitamin C!

  5. Right, basically all cabbage its great for piggies,BUT ICEBERG lettuce is poisonous to guinea pigs and rabbits! Romain lettuce is great for guinea pigs too. So don't worry, they can eat it! Other greens they can eat are: Green peppers,Pointed cabbage(Actually most cabbage),Raspberry leaves,Apple/pear leaves in SMALL amounts(NOT plum leaves though)

Apples, carrots,And most cabbage/lettuce bags they sell in supermarkets(as long as i DOESN'T have iceberg in)  So if you want more info just type in veg and fruit suitable for guinea pigs. Hope this helps.
