I live in an apartment, down the hall from me the building is applying varnish to the hardwood floors in an apartment. I have a 7 month old baby and am worried that the fumes may be toxic to him? I dont know what distance we should be away.

  1. It is not healthy to breath the fumes of any finish, although shellac and water-based finishes are the least problematic.  You shouldn't be in a harmful situation since the varnish is being used down the hall, but they worker should still ensure there is adequate ventilation to ensure everyone is breathing relatively clean air.  If you can smell it, it means there are fumes and the landlord should ensure you (especially with a small child) are provided with temporary ventilation, fans, etc until the varnish cures.

    good luck

  2. Yes Yes Keep that baby away from all fumes very toxic!!!!

  3. It's not that bad.  If the smell bothers you, close your door and open a window, or put a fan in the window.  Or ask the superintendent/landlord/manager to put a fan in the window of that apartment, if that helps.  Lots of fresh air is the best way to offset the fumes or smell.
