  1. Normally, that type of mutation is not random but has a pattern to it.  For example I have a relative who is female who was born with 6 fingers.  The gene in her family is dominant in females.  However, it is passed from mother to sons.  When her first son was born he also had 6 fingers.  She had 4 sons and 1 daughter.  The gene is recessive in males and skips a generation.  But her grandmother also had 6 fingers, but her mother did not.   So there is a pattern to it.  I studied genetics years ago and it is not a random mutation.

  2. When the extra digit is located on the side of the hand or foot by the fifth digit it is caused by a dominant trait.

The inheritance pattern for other locations of the extra digit is not well understood.

  3. an allele is a specific version of a gene. alleles are made by mutations, so it if it was recessive it would still in a sense be a mutation, but to see if it is recessive you would have to look at your family history.
