Is having two governments in Ireland more advantageous to the Irish?

I live near the NI border. I notice that in The North on the border shopkeepers prefer cash euros over Sterling and electrical goods are cheaper than in The republic. I also notice that many northern vehicles fill up in The Republic where petrol is cheaper. Is the Republic a place to put tax-free cash money for all Northerners and The North a shoppers paradise for the Republic? Would many Irish prefer the status Quo as regards The North for these reasons?

My take on it is, I would nt go out of my way to fill up ( I would have had to drive to Moville), however, I would def get as much petrol as I could when I did cross the border.  When I lived in Dublin, I actually preferred doing shopping on the Continent.  I would buy clothes, cigarettes, alcohol in Italy, France, or Germany, as the currency was the same, but the prices and variety were different. But, for those who are unable to get away, I see your point, they would go up to Newry, Belfast, or Derry to do clothes and alcohol shopping cheaper, and often without needing to change money.  In Derry and Newry, they had dual currency tills in some shops.

Its advantagous to the shops/petrol stations on the border of course, they make more profit of the sterling!! hehe I live near NI border too.. yip =P

no thier minds were devided and they were concured i beleive by some stone age king or queen. half of them still believe they catholic and the other half prodistant.

One thing you quickly learn about the Irish people is ,they miss not a trick.The border has two way traffic,this is manipulated to its utmost.with many nice little earners,i know,i used to be involved.

It takes me an hour to get to Newry in Northern Ireland - I go once a month to stock up on toiletries, washing powder etc as Tescos in the Republic is way overpriced - it is getting better but still not worth my drive up to Newry.

Electrical goods are often cheaper in the North but the childrens shoes are cheaper in the Republic.

I find my meat is cheaper in the town where I live as is DIY materials as a local I get discount - where as if I shopped in a major supermarket I get no reward.

petrol is cheaper here - it's over £1.00 in the north now. Plus the Euro is so strong at the moment we get far much more for our money!

It would be better if the North used the Euro, but other than that the way things are going in the north now is pleasant at the best of times and we will hopefully have a dual government so that ALL people are represented.
