Question:

Is he pronating his wrist?

I asked a question about if you need to pronate your wrist with a western grip because I use the grip for years and I still don't know if I am pronating it. I just know that I pronate only during my serves (use a continental grip). So it will be alot easier to just show a video instead and respond to "seeing" it.

  1. Hey

Im at work so I cant watch your video right now cause obviously youtube is blocked!

BUT, if your talking about a serve, you shouldnt be hitting it with a western grip, ONLY continental.

If you talking about groundstrokes then you should not be pronating on groundstrokes.  Pronating is the act turning your wrist outward during the serve.

I highly, highly, highly recommend you watch this video on pronating.

This is my site.  Registered tennis pros submit articles and videos for you to learn from.  There are tons of world famous and local pros that are currently on it.  Browse around too!

  2. pronation is when you hold your wrist stiff and move your arm in one direction (no twisting of the joints).  If you are hitting forehands or backhands without pronating your wrist, then you are being too wristy and it will go in all sorts of directions.

I use a continental grip while serving, but I know some people who don't.

NEVER pronate during a serve no matter what grip you use. You are supposed to have a flexible wrist during serves.

  3. No, Novak is not pronating his wrist.  I believe pronation only applies to serve.  When hitting groundies, the wrist should always be locked.  But if you define pronation as moving the wrist before impact, then that is probably pronation.  Because it looks like Novak is moving the wrist right before the racket hits the ball :)
