My son is 17 months old, full of energy, always happy and smiling, is always on the go running around and playing from the min he wakes up until he goes to bed, and he has never been ill. he woke up this morning his usual self full of energy but then started whimpering at about 11am so i gave him a cuddle and he hasn't moved from the sofa since, he has just been lying there all day with a blanket wrapped around him having lots of little naps, i have made him 3 meals and each one he has tried to eat but he hasn't swallowed anything, he isn't drinking properly either, just a few sips every so often, his breathing has also become more rapid. He is still chatting away to me and is aware of whats going on around him and he is holding his mouth allot which makes me think he is teething but he doesn't have any energy to move and i am worried about his breathing. he also has a slight temperature so i gave him Calpol to help bring it back down. my eldest never had any problems at all when she was teething so i am not sure what the normal symptoms are.

Does it sound like teething to you?

  1. He could be teething.  It could also be that he has a sore throat. I would give the doctor a call if he continues to act this way tomorrow.  Hope he feels better!!

  2. if your child is this bad then you should have contacted your doctor before writing this, so do it now you will be transferred to the out of hours service , and if he gets worse then go straight to hospital a&e

  3. The panting like breathing is due to the fever.  Napping is good for him.  Don't worry much about the eating make sure he is drinking a lot of fluids.  He could have a sore throat, possible step throat.  He may just have a virus.  look to see if he has any white spots in his mouth or on his throat.  Just watch his fever if spotty throat take him to doctor to get antibiotics.

  4. O.K.  )JB I want you to think of it this way he is your son so it don't matter if the hospitals are busy or not and if the doctor say's ahh he's just fine then if you are still worried it's called a second opinion people do it all the time and with doctor's I would highly recommend it because they are human to and can misdiagnose a symptom also but remember you are the mother so you are the one who calls the shots not the hospital or the doctor.

I hope that I have been helpful and I hope your little one will be alright.

  5. He could be teething. He also might have a sore throat because of the holding his mouth and not eating.

  6. I'd give the calpol a try.  Children are different when they are teething, id hate to be going through that.  Have you tried Calgel or Bonjela to see if that maybe numbs it a little bit for him.

If he isn't better tomorrow then I would be taking him down to the doctor to get him checked over.  I would be making sure he drinks lots of water and take him in to your bed and keep an eye on him.

And it sounds bad that you would be made to wait that long for a doctors visit considering that your son is so young :(

I hope that he feels better soon...a good sleep might just be the thing for him, poor little lamb.

  7. It's always scary when such happy babies don't act their usual selves. When my son teeths he always gets a fever and looses some of his appetite. I would make sure to try and keep your son's fever down and try to get him to drink as much liquids as possible. If he stays lethargic for more than 2 days, definately take him to the doctor. Better safe than sorry.

  8. Teething symptoms can vary from child to child but my daughter and all the kids I have looked after would be up and about between bouts of pain. You sound concerned and I would say to follow your gut and call your health visitor.  It's not like they'll be angry if it is only teething and it's always better to be safe. x

  9. hi there you didnt say how many teeth ur wee one has! he might be cutting back teeth which are really painful but children and babies dont have rapid breathing when teething not normally anyway I would consult your doctor or nhs 24 straight away he may just have a bad virus as with this weather everyone seems to be getting something if the calpol isnt helping him that much you can top that up with kids ibuprofen its safe to do this but call the doc and get your babies breathing checked out please its better being safe than sorry x

  10. Hi there, i really dont want to criticise you in anyway, but i think you should have him checked over by the doctor !!! just because you have mentioned his breathing has become maore rapid and that he has slept quite a bit today, from my experience, they do get a bit tearfull with teething, and cheeks are a bit red and drooling a bit, but i wouldnt say lack of energy, but then pain can make you want to rest. Eating, i have noticed kids tend to pick at their food, but i wouldnt worry about the eating too much just now i would be thinking about keeping him hydrated, make sure he drinks, even if it is just sips, but make sure it regular. You did the right thing by giving him calpol, but to be on the safe side, iwould have him checked by the doctor, have you checked for oral thrush ? i hope he gets better soon, take care XX
