  1. Our environment is our biggest commodity that we have.  We can take it for granted and have no future for tomorrow or nurture it so that there will be a tomorrow.  It's as easy as that.

  2. I feel that the earth is one large organism populated by many smaller organisms which are themselves populated by smaller organisms.

The bacteria in our stomachs depend upon us to survive just as we depend upon the earth to survive.

But the earth is more complicated than that because each of the species of organism on the earth depends upon other species in complicated and balancing ways.  The human species for example needs certain plants and animals for food and shelter but a huge range of other organisms help to maintain the plants and animals on which we rely.  It all forms a complex web in which balance is essential.

Fortunately the complex web is largely self balancing and adaptive.  When one species becomes too numerous other species that feed upon it will breed more rapidly and restore the balance.  If that fails then hunger or disease will do the job.  This is true even of humans except that we, alone amongst the range of organisms, have learnt to employ non-renewable resources to extend our capabilities and so grow our population beyond a sustainable balanced level.  Worse still we are each wasting non-renewable resources to acquire unnecessary stuff which quickly becomes pollution and landfill.

Of course there is a limit to the extent to which the human population can unbalance the natural world.  If we continue on our present course  climate change will stretch our resources by creating new areas of the world that are uninhabitable (by flooding in some areas and droughts in others) and at the same time the non-renewable resources will become scarce making migration and the transport of food more difficult.  The consequent economic and social upheaval will lead to the collapse in population and change of lifestyle needed to restore balance but the human suffering is too awful to contemplate.

Fortunately we can avert this suffering, because we have the intelligence to recognise where we have been going wrong.  Providing we act quickly we can simplify our lifestyles so that the use of non-renewable resources is slowed down and with it climate change.  At the same time we can take steps to bring a halt to population growth (family planning).  We can use new technologies to help solve the problems instead of misusing them to exacerbate the problems.

Many people are afraid that a simple lifestyle will be less fun than their present wasteful lifestyles but I can assure them this is not so.  By walking and pedalling instead of using a car I am able to have more fun and maintain better physical fitness that enables me to enjoy other activities such as singing and dancing.  I also save a great deal of money so that I no longer have to work so hard and have more time for family and friends.  This is further aided by not wasting money and resources on needless stuff in order to keep up with the neighbours.  I have found that failing to keep up has not damaged my enjoyment of life at all; it has just reduced the stress.

In summary we do need to behave responsibly in order to avoid enormous suffering for our children and grandchildren.  This means family planning and simple lifestyles.  Fortunately this is easily done and enjoyable so start now and demonstrate to others that it makes sense.

  3. Yes I owe that much to are Earth! With out it I wouldn't be a live see the ones I love never would have met them!

  4. Yes. As we all know Earth is the only planet that sustains life in our solar system. If ever there are other planets outside our system, it would take many years just to travel and it is impossible to transfer everyone on earth to the new planet.

  5. Definitely it is yes, It is not one human being or the present generation but the question of generations to come.

  6. Yes because it's our home, however all the theories - and they are just that - spark panic. One theory goes something like this: the Earth naturally cools and warms over time. The greenhouse gases get to the stage where they block out the heat from the sun and Earth enters an ice age. The sun's heat is reflected from the white which warms up the planet again. Then there's the theory that the Earth naturally heats up and this causes a raise in Carbon Dioxide. Noone knows for sure, it's all speculation. We are running low on fossil fuels, thats a fact, and we need to find alternative means of sustaining the lifestyle we lead, or else change our lifestyles to match our available resources. We can all play a part in this by not wasting these resources, eg not wasting electricity. But it isn't as straightforward as that, I believe the Earth will continue on it's heating and cooling cycles and that our presence has little to do with it other than perhaps speeding it up.

  7. yes. we do not realise how important it is to act responssibly, generally we do not wish to trouble about anything but our own small interests,

  8. It's not really a simple "yes or no" answer...

Is it COMMON SENSE that everyone should do what they can to minimize their impact to the environment?  Of course.

Does that mean the agendas of the various "enviro-n**i" organizations should be forced onto everyone?  Nope.

COMMON SENSE would be that everyone practice "responsible use" of our natural resources - meaning all natural resources, such as water, timber, mineral, petro-chemical, electricity, etc.  Responsible use would include things such as recycling, reusing, minimizing consumption, and minimizing impacts during extracting, harvesting, manufacturing, refining, etc.

The "responsible use" does NOT mean locking those natural resources away and making them off limits.  It means just what it says:  Use the resources of this planet responsibly & wisely.

If each and every person would make a small change - even if that small change is the installation of more efficient lighting or appliances, and reducing/combining your trips when you drive, the CUMULATIVE impact/savings would be massive.

Unfortunately, COMMON SENSE isn't so common anymore, so many - if not most - people don't make even the little changes that would add up to massive savings.

  9. yes,i think it is everybody's responsibility. we all live on this earth and should take care of it. one way is by giving up your car, especially if you have two

  10. well we should make it our responsibility if we want to keep living here.

if everyone went with the no answer then we'd b pretty fkd right?

we MUST take responsibility for looking after this earth otherwise there will be no earth left!

    BE GREEN. CARE!

  11. Absolutely. If we don't look after our home, then who will? Regarding your second opinion, we do have natural resources to use but we also know they are limited. What will we do when they end up? From where are we going to borrow trees, fuel......

    Think

  12. yah....we need 2 luk aftr d earth....for soo long it has given us so many things for our survival.....its our duty to give something back to it

  13. Nope. You do it. I'm busy cutting trees.

  14. yes, I think we owe it to MOTHER earth.

  15. Yes, because we are sharing the earth with billions of other organisms and we seem to be the only species intent on destroying it

  16. Of course it is.  It is my responsibility to do the best I can to pass this gift (called Earth) on to the generations to come, so that they can live as well as possible.  That not everything is in my control is irrelevant; I can only be responsible for myself and my family, and do my best to educate others about best practices. Whether they follow any of these is between them and God.

I was once told that I shouldn't worry about global warming. To that, I say that this is not an experiment we should try.  If we  do nothing, and the naysayers are correct, then other than being out of fuel, no big deal.  But, if they are wrong, millions of people will be displaced, and flooding, drought and famine will greet our children.  I am not a big fan of Russian roulette, especially with five slugs in the chamber.

Are we completely the cause of global warming? Of course not, but we are exacerbating it.  I cannot imagine the argument that suddenly having millions of cars and trucks on our planet (not to mention factories, etc.) has no impact.  Of course we are impacting the planet.  Of course we are changing the atmosphere.

Naturally, there is more to caring for the planet than watching CO2. We need to look at all of our activities.  We need to search and research for the best practices that will have as little negative impact as possible.  Most of these aren't even difficult (like changing a light bulb, or tossing waste into a recycle bin instead of the trash).

And, we need to remember that we cast our votes with our dollars.  Every time we purchase something, we vote for the packaging it is in, the place where it is made, and the practices and materials that go into making it. If it is an auto, we vote for the fuel efficiency, and overall impact.

Finally, most religions teach that we are to care for the earth. Can so many be wrong?
