  1. Here is great advice on feeding hermits.  You can use some commercial food, but human grade food in variety is best.

  2. Pet store brands contain lots of preservatives which can be harmful to hermit crabs. I personally avoid them all together. I either buy food at a pet shop free of dangerous preservatives and I feed them table scraps.

  3. Commercial hermit crab food is fine, as long as it does not contain:

    -ethoxyquin

    OR

    -copper sulfate

Both are harmful to hermit crabs.  In addition to commercial foods, you will want to occasionally offer a variety of fresh foods.  Try some out to see what your crabs prefer.  When I cook, I set aside a little bit of food (fruits and veggies, and cooked meats/fish) and chop it up finely for them.  Make sure that you remove any uneaten fresh foods within a day or it will spoil.  You will also want to provide a calcium source; cuttlebone, crushed cooked egg shells (off like a hardboiled egg), sand dollars, or coral all work well.  Make sure you have enough fresh, dechlorinated water for them, as well as ocean water (salinity should be 1.021 - 1.024).
