  1. The collisions in football are more vicious, but I think Hockey players are tougher...

  2. Overall I would say Football is tougher. Hockey is more of an aerobic sport w/ some wrestling in the corners and, compared to the overall game time, the occasional hard hit.

Football is a constant hitting and wrestling match between some VERY large guys. The smallest football players weigh as much as the biggest Hockey players. And full speed open field hitting is the norm in Football.

Not taking anything away from Hockey, it's a rough sport, (and my personal favorite), but Football is a lot rougher and more physically taxing.

  3. Which sport has the cliche of players missing teeth....HOCKEY.

  4. Hockey is a lot rougher. In football, all they are doing is jumping on eachother and grabbing at eachother. Hockey players suffer the  biggest injuries, and they get checked constantly. Hockey players, unlike football players, actually need some skill.

  5. hockey by a trillion. you cant fight or push people that hard without getting a penalty. ice hockey. football is tough but it doesnt compare to hockey.

  6. i think they are both pretty tough but hockey is tougher. not only are you getting hit your getting hit into hard boards/glass and when you get hit and fall your landing on hard ice not grass. hockey is also tougher because its way faster than football. in football its a 30 sec play then you stop in hockey the players keep going for the whole period, yea they have shifts but when they are on the ice its a lot faster that football. also in hockey if you get hit with a puck or block a puck it hurts so bad in foot ball if you get hit by the ball its really nothing. there are also always sticks hitting guys in hockey and guys are getting cut and stichted up constitley and then are back for their next shift in foot ball that doesn't happen. also in hockey there is fighting so the guys always have to be ready when there is a scrum in football that doesn't happen that often. hockey is just tougher all around. its on ice at a high speed, there is hitting, fighting, pucks hitting guys, sticks flying in guys faces etc. that doesn't happen in football

  7. Hockey is harder to play, but football is much harder hitting.  Hockey requires much more all around athletic ability (balance, stamina, hand-eye, ext.), but in football you've got a three hundred pound guy crushing you with no charging rules to protect you.  The hits in hockey are hard but are more based on finesse and the greater good, football you just wanna destroy whoever is unfortunate enough to be holding the ball.

  8. I have played both competitively (though certainly not pro).

I really think it depends on the position in football. Running backs and linebackers take huge amounts of abuse. Tight ends and wide receivers a bit less.

The hardest single hit I ever took was playing ice hockey. But the worst I ever got banged up was in football.

The difference is that in hockey I would get hit hard occasionally...in football constantly. Even a successful play in football and you are still usually eating dirt.

I think the players themselves are about the same. The toughness that really matters in sports is mental anyway, imo.

  9. No. Hockey is rough, but Football is brutal.

Football players are bigger and stronger on average, playing in a sport where players play once a week because it takes about that long to recover after a game. Football players have a higher season ending injury rate, shorter careers, and carry a higher risk of life long disability than hockey players for a reason.

  10. This is very simple to answer.  What would the injury report of a football team look like if they played 3 games a week, 80 games a season.  There is nothing more physical than football except maybe getting into a car wreck.

  11. How is it not? I admit that all sports in the past was much more tougher then todays wussy athletes. But did you catch that throat slashing?! Also fighting and the fact that they skate faster into muscular guys with sticks. No doubt hockey is. The real question is Rugby vrs hockey.

  12. Everyone pretty much summed it up, however I'd like to add that no one in any sport is tougher than a hockey player. Boys are hardcore!!!! Injuries that might put a football player out a few weeks, keep a hockey player out for maybe a shift.

  13. Too close to call. Both have their big hits. Penalties are a common part of both games. I assume everybody here knows how tough hockey is. The fights, a stick to the face, bleeding on the ice, stich it up and jump right back into the game. For football, I think people largy underappreciate what it takes to be a lineman. There are some nasty, brutal things going on in there that the camera just doesn't pick up (and for good reason). I guess nobody can really say for sure without playing both sports at a professional level, and that would still be based on what position they played and their own personal experiences. Nevertheless, I think it is safe to say that hockey and football are the two toughest major sports played in America.

  14. Arguable point, either way it goes..... 20mph on skates slamming you into a harder surface with less padding......

    1. I think Running Backs take way more abuse than some Hockey Players

    2. I think that some wide receivers  take the same abuse as hockey players.

    3. I think it really depends on the the position you play

    4. Lineman may be strong tough men.... but getting slammed by an open ice hit like Kronwall did this playoffs... hockey players take more than any lineman in Football

    5. AGAIN, depends on the position.... some Football players take more abuse.... but as a whole... I have to go with Hockey Players!

  15. Generally speaking, I'd vote for hockey. On a whole, the average football player really isn't much bigger than a hockey player and eh also gets to wear way more padding.

Both are super tough, but being hit by a guy on skates into a wall that doesn't give, then having to get right back up and do it again is way harder, IMO, than gettiong hit by a guy running, falling on grass or turf, then getting play stopped.

I don't buy into the once a week being needed for football players, given the other tradeoffs, padding, etc. doing anything 3 times a week, at least, of that nature is going to take a toll on the body way quicker than a once a week game and for a shorter season.

  16. I'd say hockey, but could also depend on the rules of the league. If it is a league that doesn't have much checking then I'd probably say football is tougher. I'd vote by the Pro Level though.

  17. When you take all things into account: Hockey is tougher and rougher.

Not all hockey players wear visors or face shields - players get hit in the face with pucks and sticks... They get stitched up and go back out and play.

Hockey is played on skates - even though they have good balance it is easier to knock a player down when he is on skates. As we all saw this year skates can cause very bad injuries... Richard Zednik can contest to this.

Hockey players have a stick - whether or not it is used a weapon it can cause injuries. Players get hit in the face, back of the legs, or across the wrist.

    Both have hard hitting.

    Hockey has (legal) fighting.

Not trying to take anything away from football but Hockey is the rougher sport.

  18. Yeah it is. It takes so much more skill, hardwork, and just toughness. You need to be physical everywhere, and you don't get as much of a break that football players get. And not as much padding.

  19. field hockey beats them all.field hockey requires lods of stamina.after all it is action packed 70 mins

  20. hockey is so tougher!!! bloody noses, chipped teeth, broken legs, THE WHOLE SHABANG!
