I'm just asking this question because I don't know the answer!!! I think the three of them (hoe, spade, shovel) can be used to dig the ground. But I need to know THE MOST SUITABLE for digging. That's all. Thank you!

  1. A spade fork will turn the ground with a little easier method than a shovel, being that it has individual prongs and less resisitance..it also will break it up in different seperate chunks unlike a shovel turning it in one big chunk each turn..it penetrates the ground easier and also will stradle roots in the ground due to seperate prongs..unlike a shovel being one solid piece... a hoe is more for weed removal than digging.. I would use A spade fork..You still will have to "turn the ground with this manual method a few times..not just once..but less with a spade then with a shovel..

  2. A mattock is very good for breaking up the ground and a rake will tidy it for you. A hoe is used for removing unwanted plants and weeds, the spade and shovel is used for shifting large chunks of earth or soil to another area in your garden. Have a great day!

  3. Shovel to dig.... hoe to chop up surface plants and soil, spade to dig a very small area or hole to plant a plant.

  4. I still prefer dynamite.

  5. Hi Fifi,

There is an alternative method utilizing a tool called a digging bar (at least that is what it is referred to in this area).  They are sold at HD, are about 6' tall witha 4"-5" chisel point on one end and a flat round hand hold on the other.  It is made of steel, so it's rather heavy, but works well when lifted into the air and allowed to enter the ground, kinda like a stake.  The bar can be moved back and forth to loosen the dirt and after removing the bar the loose dirt can be easily scooped out by a shovel.  This process, repeated chops into the ground with the bar, followed by removing the dirt with a shovel, is much easier to do than simply digging-especially in hard ground.
