Is holistic medicine legitimate?

Insureance companies are in business to make money. They know how to put thier bottom line in the black. So with this said, why is it that insurance companies will pay nothing for holistic health care or products? They will pay for spine manipulation, but that is because some medical doctors prescribe it.

If holistic really works it should be able to save insurance companies a fortune. They are quick to pay most any fee conventional medical providers hand them.

Is holestic medicine a farce, or is there some explainable reason for this? It can't be politics, Insurance companies are in business to make money. Any thing they could do to cut their outlay should interest them.

As stated above, many insurance companies are paying for things like therapeutic massage and other treatments.

Many holistic treatments are now becoming mainstream medicine.

Magnet therapy is now used in some hospitals.

The key is having legitimate medical studies that can be repeated.

In the case of magnets, they found a significant increase in bone regeneration.

Even nutracuticals are now found in the Physicians Desk Reference and main stream medicines have crossed the line to become holistic medicines as strange as that sounds.

In the latter, NAC is used in combination with other natural things to boost glutathione. It is not covered by insurance that I know of. But the people that take it swear by it.

Likewise the bonded whey protein that has cysteine in it is used by doctors to decrease side effects of chemo therapy.

(NAC is a chemical form of cysteine)

I know in several hospitals where the doctors prescribe gum chewing to decrease risk of post op illus.

Three hospitals give peanut butter and black strap molasses to boost red blood cell levels when using Epogen or EPO.

It is here, most do not know of it.

It's all about politics and money.

Holestic medicine has been around since the beginning of time. Western medicine for a little over a hundred years.

There's no money in holestic medicine because the aim of the healer is to get you better. Doctors want you to keep coming back.

Recently their was an article printed about why doctors did NOT want to tell their patients that there was no hope, that with / without radiation or chemo, they would die. The reason? Most people when told that in the end they would die, opted not to continue with the thousands and thousands of dollars worth of treatment.

I think that some holistic medicines are, and some are not.

We are finding that some alternative medicines are worth while. And some are not. If there is scientific evidence to support it, it gets used in mainstream medicine. But for some things, there just is not the evidence. Or we have evidence that it does nothing at all, hence no doctor worth his salt would recommend it.

I think the whole conspiracy about doctors being out to make you sick it silly. For one, they would have to ALL be in on it. IN every country in the world. And I have never seen so many poeple agree on anything or manage to keep such a big secret.

There are scientists, universities, nurses, physios, speech pathologists, dietitians, politicians, lab workers, editors of journals, publishers and pharmacists in every country in the world who would also have to in on this great conspiracy to keep people sick.

In fact, the only people that seem to be willing to speak out about this conspiracy is the alternative practitioners themselves. They are all too willing to discredit doctors and tell people that they are sick and need treatment.

Just something to think about.

If holistic medicine worked, and we have evidence that it does. We use it. Considering it has been around for thousands of years you would think that we would have evidence by now, but we don't always. And these sort of things do get tested.

If such evidence is lacking, we don't use the holistic method. Simple as that.

You are misinformed.  While many insurance companies do not pay for TCM, there is an increasing number that DO, and that includes accupuncture, chiroopractic (always covered in some areas), naturopathic care, and other modalities.  

The health care insurance companies in this space ARE making money--most are private, not the mutualized Blue Cross-Blue Shield.  People who use TCM are interested in optimal health care, not just the absence of illness.  

It IS politics--MDs have fought chiropractic for years, and have been prohibited from negative and untrue campaigns several times.  Some insurance companies won't pay for less invasive techniques, either, until they have been around for 10+ years.  And there is PLENTY of evidence for those traditional modalities.  It's all about politics and bureaucracy.

Holistic medicine is not illegal. It is also not considered to be conventional Western medicine as defined by the American Medical Association. As such it is not recognized by insurance companies and the medical community at large.

Is it a farce? Who knows? The main reason insurance companies won't accept holistic medicine is the very great possibility of lawsuits from their policy holders who, upon receiving treatment, find themselves either no better, or actually worse.
