  1. Our state does not require a specific curriculum so we mix and match from free and cheap resources.

    No.  Homeschooling is not expensive.

If you are talking about distance learning on the computer, there are some states that offer that for 'free' (tax-payers money).   In my opinion, distance learning does not have the same results as homeschooling.  Homeschooling is successful because  you can create your curriculum to meet your goals and interests.

  2. You have to be careful with some of the online courses that are offered because if you are planning on going to college, the college might not recognize the classes you took online. I don't know of any free ones at all, nothing in this life is free anymore. Even if you find free ones, please be careful and do complete research on them to make sure they will be accepted by colleges or even by a high school if it doesn't work out and you have to go back to regular school. Also, you need to look at the real reason you want to be homeschooled. It isn't as glamorous as you may think.

  3. I was homeschooled and the state gave my parents a little money each school year (it was less than $100 I think...) so that helps out a bit. Otherwise, get to know your local library. You really don't need a curriculum to learn things, just go where your passions take you.

Be warned, though, that it's harder to get into college as a homeschooled. Try to keep up to date about when the SAT/ACT/AP tests are if you are interested in going to college.

  4. I have three children that I have homeschooled for over 8 years. I used Alpha Omega Publications -Switched On Schoolhouse. (CD-Rom based curriculum) It costed approximately 250.00 per child, per year.

I am now using Alpha Omega Publications - Lifepacs. I just purchased everything I needed for two children. 5 core subjects: Bible, Math, Science, History, & Language Arts. I also purchased the elective Home Economics. It costed me a total of $447.00 for two children for a full year. (They are highschool level.)

So if you compare what I spend for a full year of curriculums for two children to the fees, transportation, and lunch cost at a public school - then it is really cheap to homeschool! :-)

You could get everything you need for the 10th grade (core subjects and electives) for approximately 300.00 for the whole year.

    Hope this helps you.

    Angela

  5. Homeschooling can cost anywhere from nothing to thousands of dollars. There are the free online schools, but that's basically public school done in your house, not real homeschooling. I never did online school, but in my 10th grade year we only spent about $50 because we used mostly borrowed books and materials, resources offered for free by a local homeschool group, library resources, and things in the community (places to go on field trips, community classes and activities, clubs, museums, etc). It went very wella. We spent about the same my freshman year, only a bit more to cover the cost of the clubs and activities I was in, fencing, and a few extra things we knew I'd use all through highschool, not just that year (math manipulatives, K'nex, art supplies, some binders anad things for organization, etc), and this year (11th grade) we spent about $400 which is still fairly little considering that this number covered the cost of books, chemistry supplies (chemicals, glassware, lab instructions, scales, etc), computer software afor French, guitar lessons (along with new strings and picks) scientific calculator, braille lessons, field trips, supplies for projects and other hands on activities, a robotics and programming curriculum (including tools, nuts, bolts, and wires when I needed spares) art classes in the community, and LOTS more. It doesn't have to be expensive.

  6. Homeschooling isn't expensive.

I'm happy you want to do this. It's a bit life changing though. You are going to have to be headstrong and diligent about studying.

Like others have said, when college pops up, be aware of the ACT/SAT dates. You may also, if you don't find a program that is accredited and to get a diploma, have to  get your GED, which is painless.

The cheapest way to do this is to buy used textbooks. You can buy them from companies (like The Backpack). Or even ebay. (I still have mine if you want them too). With a company like The Backpack, you can say "I need a kit for the 10th grade" and you will get books that are used in the 10th grade at high schools.

But when you buy used you are also getting older books, but that's ok because the info is still usually the same.

If one of your parents is teaching you it might be a good idea for them to get the Teacher's Editions of the books you will be using.

  7. cheaper than private

  8. You can homeschool for very little or for free, depending on how resourceful you are.  http://www.homeschoolbuyersco-op.org/com... is just one of many, many sites.

The Internet is filled with free resources for every subject you would learn in high school.  In addition, your local public library is a goldmine of resources.

Get a copy of this book: http://lowryhousepublishers.com/TeenageL...  It was written just for kids like you.

  9. Options really depend on where you live. There are free ones all over. Many online charter schools are popping up all over. Many of them are now using k12 products. k12 schools are good for many reasons. Each student is given a placement test and then given individualized curriculum based on his or her individual needs. With the help of online charter schools today, homeschooling can be much easier than it used to be. They provide you with everything you need, a computer, a printer, books, supplies, and teachers that you can both email and call for help and assistance. This is free and there are no charges. Online schools are definitely becoming a way of the future for the children in generations to come.

Going to an online school is no different than going to a traditional public school or a private school. They graduate with a real diploma the same as any school. My son graduated from an online charter school and now attends a private university (University Of Dayton) with scholarships. They will also help you with making sure that all state required tests are done yearly and proficiencies are completed for graduation.

Connections Academy is also one that now offers online schooling FREE of charge in various areas. And there is a good chance from looking at their map that if they are not in your area now, that they may very well be soon. And again they will provide each student with all the materials needed to complete the school year each year.

Progress Academy is open to anyone with access to an internet connection. As an online curriculum program, they are available around the world to provide a quality homeschooling curriculum. Progress Academy is unique because they offer an annual subscription with a customized student account. You may pick and choose the courses you would like, and have 365 days to work at your own pace.

Progress Academy is not a free onlne school but is affordable. For as low as $71.00 a month you can enroll and get everything you need. This school is available for children grades k-12.
