  1. Yes, it's legal.  You can buy cirriculum online, teacher supply stores, ebay, all over the place.  A good way to start is by networking through your local organizations and gathering info on the many, many, many approaches to learning via cirriculum, or non-cirriculum styles of home schooling.  All cirriculum is different and may not be what you want, and you may opt out of cirriculum, altogether.

I would add only two more websites to the ones already listed:  http://www.homefires.com/

You do not need to get a curriculum.  You can devise one yourself, you can use just the library and the Internet, or you can unschool.  http://unschool.info/

  4. Homeschooling is legal in all 50 states INCLUDING California.

Michigan is one of the better states for homeschooling when it comes to lack of government intrusion. All you have to do is teach reading, spelling, mathematics, science, history, civics, literature, writing, and English grammar, but you don't have to report it to anyone. There are many choices for curriculum, from none at all to a purchased set of materials. When I started, it helped me to find homeschool support groups in my area and attend a few meetings. Find some groups at: http://www.hslda.org/orgs/default.asp?St...

Some homeschool groups have beginner sessions, usually in late summer or early fall, and they invite anyone to attend and learn more about homeschooling. They often share reading lists and have panels of homeschooling parents talk about what works best for their families.

Another choice is to go to a used homeschool curriculum sale so you can see examples of materials with your own eyes. If you live in the Grand Rapids area, google "Home School Building." They have an awesome store with nothing but homeschool materials, as well as a library so you can see many options.

If you know any homeschoolers, talk to them about the age and interests of your children and see what materials work for them.

  5. homeschooling is legal in all states except California.
