Yes, but it's made up of four. The United Kingdom of Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and Northern Ireland. That's what it says on my passport.

My Swiss residence permit says Gross Britannien and the next time I have to renew it, I'm going to point out that 'GB' is not correct.

Yes, the UK is one country. It actually has four constituent parts (England, Wales, Scotland  - collectively Great Britain, as well as Northern Ireland), but these are non-sovereign entities with relatively limited local autonomy.
