Question:

Is human breast milk dairy?

We were just talking about diet and the topic of milk and dairy came up and one the things that cropped up which none of us could say for sure is whether human milk can be classified as dairy or not.

If it is dairy then are dairy/lactose intolerant babies also intolerant of breast milk? what should they be fed then?

and also dairy is referred not just to cows milk but the milk of buffalo goats sheep and camels. Then does that mean the milk of any other animals like say for example cats and dogs is also classified as dairy?

funny/stupid comments always welcome (and expected!), but really would like some one to put a serious contribution in too.

thanx.

  1. Yes it's dairy.

    All milk is dairy.

Lactose intolerance is common with cow's milk only.

Babies that are lactose intolerant can be fed breast milk or goat milk.

Rare allergies are a different story.

Also horse milk( mares milk) resembles human milk the closest.

There is hardly any butterfat in either( so don't think about making cheese from either). It just won't work.

Also keep in mind( for those that don't classify cat, dog, pig milk etc etc) as dairy it may not be a suitable dairy product for humans but it is a suitable dairy product for animals.

  2. I can't agree that it's "dairy" - I mean - when did you last see a herd of women or a flock of girls on a farm being kept for their milk?

No, I just don't think so.

Possibly 'animal' but certainly not 'dairy'!

  3. i dont think so

  4. ofcourse... milk is milk and milk is dairy, regardless of what species produces it.
