Is hydrocodone 500mg strong? ?

Vicodin 5 / 500 is what you have...and yes, they are strong enough to ease your rib pain.

The '500' is refering to the Tylenol.

Vicodin 7.5 is stronger-but no extra tylenol.

First hydrocodone is not measured like that.  That is the tylenol in there which is 500 mgs.  That is the standard dose for extra strength tylenol.  

I think you are overshooting the pain by taking hydrocodone for it.  I would take tylenol or advil.

First, the others are right.  The 500 mg refers to the amount of Tylenol in the pill, not the amount of hydrocodone.  And you should always check with your doctor before taking any prescription medication.  But why are other people judging your level of pain and deciding what you should/should not take for it?  As a nurse, that is my pet peeve-people who think they can decide if you are really in enough pain for pain medication.  Take it from me, you guys, ribs hurt, whether they are broken, cracked, or bruised.  I hope you are never in true pain and get handed a bottle of Advil because someone thinks they have the right to decide just how much you are hurting.

A low dose of hydrocodone is 10/500 known as 10s and it is much too strong for a bruised rib.  Never take any controlled substance w/o a doctor's perscription.

Yes, it is medicine for moderate to severe pain. I would think you could get relief from something a little less potent than Hydrocodone. Another name for it this drug is Vicodin. And it is made out of synthetic (man made) codeine. The 500 mgs

refers to the amount of Tylenol that is mixed with 5 mgs of synthetic codeine. Hydrocodone is the generic name of this drug.

Have you tried anything else to help take the edge off of the pain? If you are in really bad pain, then yes, this should take care of it, but I would recommend taking something less potent because this medicine can make you really sleepy.

If you are in a lot of pain, take the medication, then stay close to home so you can take a nap whenever you take this drug.

I took this for chronic back pain for years so I know. And this is the most abused prescription pain killer on the prescription market. The strengths vary from 5/500, 7.5/500 and 10/500 and if the doctor thinks you need more Tylenol, they can write the prescription for 7.5/650 or 10/650.

The first number(s) refer to the amount of Hydrocodone and the three numbers refer to the amount of Tylenol that is in this medication.

My ribs were all bruised in my car accident and it can hurt just

to breathe. I was given Vicoden then because not only did my

ribs hurt from being bruised, I also suffered a concussion, hit

my head on the rear-view mirror, and I suffered really bad neck and back pain from which I have never recovered.

If you are hurting badly, you can take up to two pills at the same time, but if you aren't used to taking strong pain pills, then you may get drowsy and need a comfy place to sleep. But if your doctor didn't say it was okay to take two pills at a time, then follow his instructions. Some people can handle two pills and others cannot.  Or they're just wasting good medicine rather than saving it for the next time they need

a strong analgesic for pain.

If your doctor prescribed this for you, then by all means, do not

waste anymore time here and take one of these to ease your pain. You might want to take it with food or milk though, as it

can upset your stomach.
