Question:

Is hydrogen carbonate soluble or insoluble in solution?

what i mean is, i was discussing this with a friend and she said that it was soluble, but he solubility table says otherwise.

so which is right...and could someone please explain it to me?

  1. It depends on what solvent you are trying to dissolve it in. If the solvent is H2O then yes, it will dissolve. If the solvent is organic then it will not dissolve.


  2. It would probably be considered soluble but it is an intermediary species as it very rapidly dissociates into carbon dioxide and water:

          H2C03   ----->  H2O + CO2

    perhaps it might be described as a CO2 solution (soda water) and therefore soluble but since it goes CO2 which gasses of not soluble, kinda a mute point
