  1. Hypnosis is a recognized technique in mental health and medicine. It has several professional organizations including  the Society of Psychological Hypnosis Division 30

of the American Psychological Association http://www.apa.org/

However, what actually takes place and how it actually works are still active areas of research and debate.

  3. It is none of the above.

Hypnosis is only confusing the subconscious and inputting suggestions at that instant. The subconscious is confused and looking for direction, so anything told to it at that instant will seem like something to do no matter how strange.

There are many tricks or techniques to get a person into that confused state where the persons subconscious starts looking for what do I do and is open to suggestions.

Anchors, pattern break , building re pore and mimicking and trance state.

  4. YYYEESS....  HYPNOSIS IS A PROCESS IN WHICH CRITICAL THINKING FACULTIES OF THE MIND ARE BY PASSED AND A TYPE OF SELECTIVE THINKING AND PERCEPTION IS ESTABLISHED................

  5. yes,Maria is a real procedure;Hypnosis is a procedure during which a health professional or researcher suggests that a client, patient, or subject experience changes in sensations, perceptions, thoughts, or behavior. The hypnotic context is generally established by an induction procedure.

  6. Hypnosis is real, but the concept has been abused by television and movies to create a distorted view of exactly what it is.

Basically it is simply a technique which relaxes the patient and allows thier thoughts to flow easier.

The concept of hypnotising someone and makeing them cluck around like a chicken, only works if the person is conciously willing to cluck around like a chicken. A hypnotist cant force someone to do something that they arent willing to do.

In the relaxed state, the imagination flows more, and memories are easier to access, also to be changed.

In that state people are slightly more prone to suggestion, which is what they try to exploit in those hypnosis quit smoking or lose weight tapes. I have yet to meet someone who claims those tapes have helped them, although ive known a number of people who have tried them.

  7. Hypnisis has been accepted for over 200 years.

The human mind is amazing in it's degree of complexity and sophistication.

  8. Hypnosis certainly is real, but the method can be easily be abused. For example, the therapist can create false memories in a patient under hypnosis (see links).

  9. I agree with TR, but let me also add this:  Not everyone CAN be hypnotized--the more analytic (that is, "critically thinking") one is, the less likely it is they can be hypnotized.

As some of the other responses point out, the medical profession (some, not all) recognize and employ hypnosis as a useful supplement to other, on-going treatments.  Sadly, most of what we see out there is for-entertainment-only stuff, that has nothing to do with "real" hypnosis.

There are some great subliminal self-hypnosis tapes out there that many people swear by--you might look into these if you're genuinely serious about learning more.  Their value is that even if you're that analytic sort of person, the subliminal approach--in many cases--tends to be effective.

    Good Luck!
