i have a cockatiel named tiko, and hes deathly afraid of harnesses and flight jackets, but he loves the out doors. he is an obedient bird and has his wings clipped. he dosent try to fly away ither. would it be safe to take him outside? how is it possible for him to fly with wings clipped? ive seen him try once but he just ploped down on the ground with a thud. but i dont know if it would be 100% safe...???

  1. Get him a carrier (I use those ones that are mostly white-painted bars and have a plastic bottom) so he can go outside and still be safe.  Even if he hasn't tried to fly away before, you'd be surprised what can happen when a bird outside gets startled and there's a breeze.  Plus what if there's a cat hiding somewhere?  It's just not worth the risk.

  2. Put him in a cage ( if he likes that) If you just take him out it is probaly %95 percent safe. Do you have a fence in your backyard? If so I would say that it is pretty safe for you to do that.

  3. i would take him out in a cage or carrier. i have an african grey parrot that had his wings clipped at the time. my husband thought he would take him outside. something frightened him and he tried to fly. the wind was blowing just right where it carried him into the next door neighbors yard. our vet said just because their wings are clipped doesnt mean the wind cant carry them.

  4. It would be safe to take him outdoors. You need to train him to stay put so he doesn't hurt his keel bone. that is what he is landing on when he hits like that. Also be careful around other animal since your bird doesn't fly. (which has been my preference for years.) To me it is foolish to have a bird free flying in the house. Clipped wings are the safest way to go. Now if you have a large outdoor flight aviary with a double safety door, then flighted birds are OK. There are situations.
