Question:

Is ice skating similar to rollerblading (inline skating) at all?

I know how to rollerblade (inline skate) but I don't know how to ice skate and I am going ice skating this weekend, so I wanted to find out if it was similar

Any tips on ice skating at Fuji Ice Palace? (:

Thanks!

  1. They are similar enough that you shouldn't have any of the typical getting started problems but there are some differences to keep in mind.

All hockey and figure skates (what the places usually rent) have a rocker.  Unless your inline skates are set up for doing dance moves and slalom, the wheels will be set flat.  The rocker will make them feel like they want to go in random directions.

You use your toe more as part of your stride in ice skating than you do on inlines (assuming that you don't have the bad habit of toe pushing on inlines).

There is much less grip during the push part of your stride than with inlines.  If you have a strong push segment of the stride, you may have to back off a bit.

    Braking is obviously different.

If you do a T-stop on your inlines, it works well.

Lunge turns are also effective and easier on the ice skates because of the rocker.

Spin stops also work well on ice.

Since I have no idea where or what Fuji Ice Palace is, I can't help you there.  Just take it easy at first to feel the differences and determine what styles of stops work for you.

  2. uuh. for me, i think not. in ice skating, obviously you're skating on ice. and in inline skating, you're just skating on land or on the floor.haha.ice skating is harder that rollerblading.coz the blades of ice skates are a lot different that those of the rollerblades.goodluck on ice skating this weekend.ta-ta!

  3. sort of. the balance is different, because the blades are thinner than the wheels. But the general idea is the same, keep your legs moving and make sure you avoid deep ruts where other skaters have gone over multiple times. Also, it's harder to do right after the ice is fresh, because there is no friction. Just try not to go too slow or too fast. Even gliding motion. You'll love it!

  4. yeh, they are really similar. I do both and one difference is for ice skating it is easier to stop I think, especially if you are learning. Just do the snow plow stop (spread your skates apart and point your toes inwards at an angle to make like a point) and you should do great!

  5. They are fairly similar. I went ice skating for the first time this month, and I got the hang of it much easier because I've rollerbladed before. I found that the way you move forward is pretty much the same for both.

But the way you balance yourself on ice skates is pretty different, and ice skates aren't necessarily as smooth as rollerblades.

    GOOD LUCK!
