  1. Why don't you catalog all of the scientific breakthroughs we enjoy today that we didn't 75 years ago and see whether or not you think "commerce" killed them or facilitated their success? Drugs? Microchips? Intensive farming techniques?

  2. Yes,

Businesses and corporations are not out to progress science and human knowledge.  Businesses and corporations are out to make a buck.

Take the pharmaceutical companies, they only research medicines and cures that have a potential to generate money.   If a project does not yield a good return then it's scrap and another takes its place.  Even if the project had the potential to save lives.  If the cure is produce at a loss and money will not be recoup then forget it about it.

Another example is space exploration, this has been strictly a government endeavor because there was no way for businesses to make money on it.  The technology until recently was too expensive for the private sector to make a profit.

That is why it sometimes left to the government to sponsor studies, projects, grants etc... to further the knowledge further and because the inefficiencies of governmental bureaucracies we see a slow development in many scientific fields.

Hope this gets you started for points in your argument.
