Integrity is everything.  Integrity is 'choosing the hard right over the easy wrong', and that is directly applicable when no one is looking.  Integrity is the core of any character.  Character is what develops trust and confidence between people in any type of interpersonal relationship.  Friends, loved ones, employers, children, etc. have to know that you will do the right thing regardless of the circumstance.  Integrity may be the only anchor that you have at the end of the day when everything else is a mess; right action will always rule the day.  The recognition may take some time to materialize, but those with integrity are naturally patient.

First, you have to define what integrity is.  

:adherence to moral and ethical principles; soundness of moral character; honesty.

So, by that definition, I would definitely consider it important.  If you hold ethical principles, why would you ever deviate from them?  That would destroy the whole purpose of the principle.

Hypocrisy is anti-intellectual.  If you hold beliefs against integrity itself, then all your beliefs must go with it, including the original one against integrity.  This snowballs into a lack of thought all together, and a collapse of rationality.

If a man is against lying, and yet still lies, he only hurts himself.  He will build his ego, destroy his rationality, and loose his respect among others.  Its karma ;)

I think it is only important if it is  a quality you love and admire, and that you want to project out to those who get to know you on a deeper level.  

I think integrity is something that needs to be more important to young children and adults in today's world.  So many people do not respect their bodies in knowing what is the right and wrong thing to do in their own given situations.
