Is intercaste marriage acceptable in India?

I don't know, but it seems unlikely in rural areas. Recently a young girl (6?) was thrown on a fire  for walking on a path reserved for people of a higher class. This was in a rural area, and may not represent urban, educated areas. I do know that you are born into a class and cannot move up.

Like anywhere else, it is more acceptable to marry up (into a higher caste), than it is to marry down (with a lower caste)...
