  1. If you were growing flowers some people might giggle. But fruits and veggies are suppose to be a man thing think about it on a grander scale  who produces the fruits and veggies you eat at the super market? Farmers (who are mostley men) and besided even if it was weird of whatever your a man and the most important part about being a man is not being emotional like women so you can do whatever you want without caring what others think of you... so be a man and plant your garden  :)

  2. Actually I know more men that garden than women, That is were I got most of my information,

Good for you and Happy Gardening.

  3. Yes it's just fine for men to tend the garden.....just not in your nickers please!

  4. OK – You asked for it. If you plan on wearing a chintz dress, white gloves, a large sun hat and bloomers that show when you bend over and you live in an area where people don’t get out much – your neighbors may look at you a little funny. But if dressing like that is what makes you happy when you garden, then that is all that should matter.

I’m going to get some flack for this but that’s OK.

When was the last time you went past a home and saw a bunch of women mowing the lawn, edging and taking care of the grounds? How many women arborists do you know or have you seen? I have a collection of Bonsai books and none of them were written or have pictures of women partaking in the art. A great many flower shows/competitions are won by men. They had to take care of the plants they showed. I go to a local flea market every Sunday that has four stands set up with plants and flowers from nurseries/greenhouses/gardens and all the people working there are men. NOW, I by no means intend to imply that women do not do any of the aforementioned types of “gardening”, nor do I mean to imply women are not excellent, award-winning gardeners but I do mean to imply – I can’t think of a single “type” of gardening or gardening related job or hobby that men do not participate in.

So go out and get yourself the best gardening tools you can afford and get those d**n hands dirty.

There isn’t anything unmanly about it.

And if you have a stressful job or no job at all – to see your plants grow, till the soil, start a compost heap, propagate (the plants), trim, water, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera – will give you a great sense of peace, accomplishment and wonder.

So put on those bloomers (under your blue-jeans), get as many seed and plant catalog's, books, periodicals, whatever - as you possibly can – maybe even join a gardening club or two (maybe it’s too soon for that) and get movin’ buddy.

Life is too short mister - to worry about what people think - and for all those beautiful roses to loss their petals and rich earthy compost to go unnoticed - without we men taking a great big whiff.

And wait until you taste one of your own home grow vegetables or fruits. There is nothing like it. I can’t remember the last time I tasted a tomato from a supermarket that was sweet, like one taken right from the vine. I have even taken an ear of corn from its stalk, ripped off the husk and eaten it – tastes like a piece of candy.

A great many of today’s scientific or botanical names of plants are named after men. These soldier’s who had occupied other countries and had an interest in botany, would come across a plant and/or flower they had not seen before and either send seeds or a specimen plant back to their native land. I doubt very much they were thought of as “less than men” because they were picking flowers and plants to send back for further scientific study.

To the contrary – they were considered “explorers” and “men of science”, often making a name for themselves in the annals of history, not for their valor or conquests in battle but for their discoveries of plants unknown to the rest of the world.

  5. I have been gardening for the past 2 years since my wife and I bought out house and I love doing it.  I cant wait to go home every day and see how my plants are doing.  There is nothing wrong with a man enjoying gardening.

  6. I know plenty of men who garden or help with the gardening. Besides, who cares what people think?  I'm assuming you enjoy it or you wouldn't be asking, and besides that, look at the money you can save by growing your own produce.  I say have fun and good luck!! :)

  7. i don't think that gardening is gender specific.  men have been doing it for many, many years.

  8. I never really thought about it (of course I am a male nurse so I stopped thinking about these sorts of things long ago). If you enjoy gardening, by all means garden! I grow veggies, flowers, trees, (weeds are a specialty), you name it. My Dad enjoyed gardening and just passed it on, I guess.

  9. Yes of course it is!!! Farmer's do gardening right???!!!!

  10. I've been gardening for fifty years and anyone who says I'm not a gardener is likely to get a spade upside their thick head. My gardens are my church and I get a little touchy about my religion.  RScott
